G20 in Rio de Janeiro: Scheduled Closures in the City
The G20 (Group of 20) is the annual meeting of the world’s leading economies, and for the first time it will be held in Brazil, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Although the most important events will take place on November 18 and 19, as of November 14, there are already plans to move around the city that will influence the dynamics of Rio over the next few days.
Below, in the first part of our special three-part series on the effects that the G20 and its parallel events will have on Rio de Janeiro, we will show you which areas of the city are scheduled to be closed from November 15, as well as the dates and times of these closures.

• Closure time: 7am to 12pm. After this period, the lanes will be cleared for regular traffic.
November 17 to 19: The lanes of the Aterro do Flamengo will be completely closed to traffic in both directions, between the Trevo dos Estudantes and the Estácio de Sá Monument. During this period, only vehicles linked to the G20 will be able to commute in the lanes.
• Closure time: Between dawn on Saturday 17/11 and 11:59pm on Tuesday 19/11.
November 20: Although the lanes will be reopened to general traffic, the region’s leisure areas will be closed on the day to ensure the safety of the delegations circulation.
Atlântica Avenue, Vieira Souto Avenue and Delfim Moreira Avenue | South Zone Shore
November 17 to 20: Leisure areas in these regions will be closed. There will also be temporary closures only during the passage of the convoys. In addition, parking spaces near the hotels won’t be allowed as well as loading and unloading along the entire shore.
There will also be a two-lane ban on Nossa Senhora de Copacabana Avenue, between Joaquim Nabuco and Francisco Otaviano streets.
• Closure times: 11am to 1pm on Wednesday 20th and 6 am to 9 am on Thursday 21st.
Botafogo and access to Túnel Santa Bárbara Tunnel
November 20: On Wednesday important streets in the Botafogo neighborhood will be closed, which are:
– Real Grandeza street, between São Clemente and Voluntários da Pátria streets;
– Palmeiras street, between São Clemente and Voluntários da Pátria streets;
– Matriz street, between São Clemente and Voluntários da Pátria streets.
• Closure time: 6pm to 11pm.
As for access to the Santa Bárbara tunnel, Rio de Janeiro City Hall recommends to avoid the tunnel from 4pm onwards, as there may be heavy traffic due to the movement of several entourages through the region and its surroundings. According to the City Hall, the best option is for drivers to use the Rebouças Tunnel as an alternative.
For the second part of this special series about G20 and its reflection on Rio de Janeiro’s dynamics, we’ll present the location of the G20 meetings and related events. We’ll also provide information on the operation of airports and urban transportation in the city.
